Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik in the battle to seal the wicket-keeping spots in the Indian team for the ongoing Asia Cup and the upcoming T20 World Cup. For the game against Pakistan, Rohit Sharma went with experience and finishing skills to bench Karthik Pant.

Pant returned to the match against Hong Kong in place of Hardik Pandya but did not face a delivery. Karthik, meanwhile, also faced just 1 ball against Pakistan as the controversy moved to Square 1 as the men in blue prepared for the Super 4 contest.

The Pant vs DK debate has been a talking point on India’s road to the T20 World Cup and it is far from a simple choice between the two. While the former works as a left-arm spin basher in the middle overs, Karthik is a death over specialist who is ultimately tasked with scoring quick runs.

Many former cricketers have been embroiled in controversy with many favoring Rishabh Pant’s extravagance over Dinesh Karthik’s elegance and effectiveness. Former Indian opener and a teammate of Dinesh Karthik, Gautam Gambhir said Pant’s omission against Pakistan was a surprising and ‘short-sighted’ move.

Commenting, Gambhir said, “A left-hander is required in the middle order. India has many right-handers, which are one-dimensional. And he did reasonably well. He can be someone who can open the game for you and he can also be a floater. A bit surprising but I hope it’s not long term. I will still support Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik. It’s a huge surprise.”

Delhi Capitals coach and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting also expressed his shock and surprise at Pant’s omission. Ponting, who has worked with the 25-year-old in the IPL for the past few years, said, “I was really surprised. To be honest, there was some talk about it, again going into the game on social media channels, which way they would go because I think they needed a sixth bowling option,” Ponting spoke on the ‘ICC Review’ show.

Former BCCI selector Saba Karim also spoke for Pant and said that he added more value to the team than Karthik. Speaking to Sports18, he said, “I was surprised as I stand by my earlier stand of keeping Pant in the team in place of Dinesh Karthik as I have always felt that we have to look ahead and still I believe that Rishabh Pant can add a lot of value. Respect for Dinesh Karthik rather than Dinesh Karthik.”

While a large majority supported Pant, Karthik’s ultimate skill was the recognition. Renowned cricket broadcaster Harsh Bhogle suggested that dropping Pant was a huge call, suggesting India’s preference to play DK as a finisher. He tweeted, “The omission of Rishabh Pant is a huge call and a sign towards the preferred line-up in the T20 World Cup. It’s also a recognition of how India want to play with DK as a power finisher.”

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh also suggested for DK that the veteran’s comeback has only seen him improve his game. Singh told Aztak, “Rishabh Pant in this short format, he is not a skilled player. However, looking at Dinesh Karthik, his graph is only going upwards. He performed well. This is the right decision. In this format, there is no point in keeping him on the bench in this form. It’s Dinesh Karthik’s time to play, he should play.”

While pundits have overwhelmingly backed Pant, Dinesh Karthik has the support of captain Rohit Sharma and the team management and is likely to get more chances in the tournament. The BCCI will announce their squad for the T20 World Cup on September 15, and performances like those against South Africa and the West Indies will surely see him on the plane to Australia.
