Saina Nehwal vs Cheung Ngan

Saina Nehwal is making her comeback to the World Championship from 2019 He missed the last edition due to groin and knee injuries, while the 2021 edition was canceled due to the outbreak of Covid-19. He is currently the most experienced Indian in the tournament and is looking for a change in his fortunes as he has struggled with his form so far this season. He failed to get past the second round of any tournament in the first half of the year. His best performance so far was a quarterfinal run at the recent Singapore Open. Saina, who is currently ranked 33rd in the world enters the tournament as an unseeded player and faces 50th ranked Cheung Ngan Yee in the first round. Ngan Yee, 29, missed most of the season due to injury and is returning this year. This will be his first tournament of the season. Both players have met five times in the past. Saina Nehwal leads 3-1 in head to head record. Nehwal will enter the competition as favourite.

India’s women’s doubles pair of Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are making their first appearance at the World Championships. The Indian pair had a great run this year. They started by finishing as runner-up at the Syed Modi International, then they won the Odisha Open title which was their first tour level title. They then made history by becoming the first Indian women’s pair to reach the semi-finals of the All England Championship. Most recently they won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games. They face Malaysia’s Low Yen Yuan and Valerie Siwe in the first round.

The Malaysian duo is ranked 33rd in the world and won the Syed Modi International earlier in the year. This was their only title this year. They reached the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open, Malaysia Masters and Malaysia Open. The first round contest is expected to be a close encounter. The two pairs met at the Syed Modi International earlier this year and the Malaysian pair won the final in straight games.
