On Sunday, Neeraj Chopra won a silver medal in men’s javelin at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, USA.

“Our Olympic Champ @Neeraj_chopra1 will not defend his title at @birminghamcg22 due to fitness concerns. We wish him a speedy recovery and support him during this challenging time.” The Indian Olympic Association said in a statement on social media.

How was Neeraj Chopra injured? Neeraj Chopra revealed after winning the World Athletics silver that he injured his groin during the 12-man final in Eugene.

The 24-year-old Olympic champion admitted that his participation in the Commonwealth Games will be taken after a medical assessment of his injury.

“During the fourth throw in the World Championship, I felt pain in my groin and will have to withdraw from CWG 2022”, Chopra told IOA.

He underwent an MRI scan the next day and subsequently doctors advised him to rest for a month.

Chopra said after Saturday’s final, in which she won the silver medal, “He will be able to gauge the extent of his injuries once his body cools down. He indicated that he will not take any chances with CWG if the injury requires rehabilitation.”

As his coach and physio have advised him to rest, Neeraj Chopra will now be out for a month.

In the recently concluded World Championships, Neeraj finished second behind Grenada’s Anderson Peters. The Grenada man won gold with a best effort of 90.54m.

Peters, 24, had 3 throws over 90 meters in the men’s javelin final in Eugene as he became just the second man to defend his javelin title at the World Athletics Championships.

Neeraj was all set for another blockbuster clash with Peters as the world champion confirmed that he will go to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Notably, Peters won bronze at Gold Coast in 2018 while Neeraj won gold.
