Liz McColgan won the same title in 1986 and 1990 – as well as the world title in 1991 – and Eilish has now written her own script after several major event near-misses.

He set a strong early pace on Wednesday and was alone with Cheptai for the final four laps before finally pulling clear in the final 150m and winning in 30min 48.60sec.

Kenya’s Sheila Kiprotich battled back from injury and won bronze after beating defending champion Stella Chesang of Uganda with more than a mile to go.

McColgan struggled at last month’s world championships due to illness but finally arrived in Birmingham fully fit.

“It’s been such an uphill year with Covid, another illness and a few other niggles,” she said.

“It was great to have my family here and the crowd in the last 200m was vibrating through my body. I’ve never run like this in my life and I never would have done it without the crowd.

“This is my third Commonwealth Games and my fourth (different) event so I finally found an event. I’ve come sixth every time so to win tonight was special. You see I want gold.”

Mom Liz added: “It’s incredible to witness your daughter win the same event – she just ran the race I knew she was capable of running.”

Hot favorite Katarina Johnson-Thompson of England retained the heptathlon title ahead of Northern Ireland’s Kate O’Connor and England’s Jane O’Dowda.
