“I enjoy sharing my experience with the youngsters in the team. I first came here in 2014 (actually 2013), when Duncan Fletcher was the Indian coach. If they (the youth) approach me for any advice, I am (always) there to answer them. Dhawan told reporters in a press conference.

The 36-year-old southpaw is rather happy that captain Rahul will get some much-needed game time ahead of the all-important Asia Cup.

“It is very good news that KL (Rahul) is back and will also lead the team. He is one of the main players of this Indian team. It will be a good tour for him before the Asia Cup starts. I am sure he will get a lot out of this tour.” Dhawan said.

All-rounder Washington Sundar was the sure shot starter against Zimbabwe after suffering a left shoulder injury in the Royal London ODI Cup.

The 22-year-old Chennaiyin last donned Indian colors during the West Indies series in February 2021.

“It’s sad that Washington is out. He is a very important player for the team. But it’s part and parcel…injuries happen. Hope he gets well soon. He will be missed as a spinner but we have good back-up in Kuldeep Yadav and Deepak Hooda. Who also bowls off-spin. India’s vice-captain Dr.

While India returned to the South African nation for the first time since 2016 and have not played against them much in the past few years, Dhawan was of the opinion that they should not take on Zimbabwe, especially after their recent series win over Bangladesh.

They won against Bangladesh. They are playing good cricket. It is good for us and we cannot take anything for granted. It’s about the process.

“Irrespective of the team we are facing, we always make sure that we do the right thing so that we get the right result. That will be our focus again as a team.” Dhawan said.

Dhawan praised senior Zimbabwean batsman Sikandar Raja and said the Indian bowlers need to bowl smart against the latter to stop him at the right time.

“He is a very good player. He has been playing for Zimbabwe for a long time. He is a quality player. I am sure our bowlers will come up with excellent plans against him. she said.

Dhawan added that the series against Zimbabwe will be important for several youngsters in the squad like Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan, Ishan Kishan and the exposure they are getting will be very beneficial for them in the days to come.

“Youngsters, these days, have got more exposure. They are confident and have good technique. Their confidence level is high due to domestic and IPL. We feel we have many options. It is a healthy sign for the team.” Dhawan said.
