Since returning to international cricket from injury, Hardik has taken 11 wickets in T20Is and scored 314 runs in 14 matches. On Sunday, he once again delivered with both bat and ball.

His brilliant spell of 3/25 included the wickets of Mohammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah. With that spell, he rocked Pakistan’s middle order as India restricted them to 147.

“In bowling, it’s important to assess the situation and use your arms. For me, short and hard length bowling is my strength. It’s about using them well and asking the right questions for batters to make mistakes. Hardik Pandya talks about his 3/25 bowling figures.

India vs Pak Live: Why Hardik Pandya is important to India’s T20 working aspirations?

  • Hardik is India’s missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle.
  • His all-round presence in the line-up gives India the balance they need.
  • If he is available, India can afford to play a pacer short in T20 because he can bowl those 4 overs.
  • India can also play an extra spinner if conditions permit or play someone like Dinesh Karthik, who excels in finishing.
  • Since Hardik is bowling at full tilt at 140kph+, he is not only an asset to the pace bowling department but also a powerful weapon.
  • His off-cutters and short balls are still two of the best weapons against any batsman in the world.
  • India have sorely missed his bowling in the T20 World Cup.
  • He did not bowl in the World T20 against Pakistan as Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan led Pakistan to a 10-wicket victory.
  • Despite bowling two overs against New Zealand, he was out of pace and rhythm.
  • Two big defeats meant that India crashed out of the tournament.
  • But with him back at 100% in both batting and bowling, India can now dream again.
  • On bouncy Australian pitches, he will be a big threat while on slower pitches he will still hold the key.
  • India can afford an extra batsman like Deepak Hooda or Dinesh Karthik in Australia, thanks to him.
  • He plays the same role in ODIs as well. He is an important 6th bowler who can bowl 5-7 overs and break partnerships.
  • With the bat, he is India’s best finisher though Karthik is a great option.
  • Not only does he play well in the middle overs against spin, he can also tackle the pacers in the death overs.

While Bhuvneshwar Kumar excelled with his bowling performance, Hardik was also exceptional with the bat. He came to the crease at number 6 in the 15th over with India still needing 59 off 34 balls. With no help from the pitch batters, managing the death overs of Naseem Shah, Shahnawaz Dahani and Haris Rauf besides Mohammad Nawaz was a tough task.

But Hardik was calm. After navigating his way through Naseem with a boundary in the 15th over, he had a tough time against Dahani and Rauf in the next two overs. But he did not lose patience.

He took over in the 19th over, hitting three boundaries to Rauf but sealing the deal. With only 7 runs needed in the last over, Ravindra Jadeja would have hoped to end things in style. But his reckless shot helped clean Nawaz off the 1st ball of the last over. 7 needed off 5 balls, Dinesh Karthik gives him a single.

But Hardik didn’t get the shot he wanted as he smashed it straight to deep-cover. However, in what was his MS Dhoni moment, he finished in style, smashing Nawaz for a massive 6 to give Pakistan the knockout punch and take India home. Thus, he also got his release.

“In a chase like this, you always plan over-by-over. I always knew there was a young bowler and a left-arm spinner too. We needed only 7 in the last over but if we needed 15 runs, I would have imagined myself. It’s not about ego, it’s about confidence. I know the bowler is under more pressure than me in the 20th over. I try to keep things simple.” Hardik Pandya says his 17-ball match-winning 33 inc.
