In fact, it was a game that shouldn’t have gone past four quarters. India were brilliant throughout the match against New Zealand. However, India conceded a late goal, converted from a penalty stroke by Olivia Marie, with less than a minute left in the match. It canceled out Salima Tete’s second quarter goal to make it 1-1 going into the final quarter.

India was absolutely dominant in the first quarter. They enjoyed solid possession, but failed to convert any chances that came their way. They continued to push in the second quarter and eventually Salima Tete scored a tough goal to take a 1-0 lead.

India dominated the contest till half time. The dominance continued after the break and India had several chances to double their lead. They were wasted.

New Zealand more desperate to equalize in the last quarter as the game progressed. They stepped it up a gear in the last 15. They found their rhythm and questioned the Indian defence, which held firm until the final minutes of the game.

A penalty corner in the last minute led to a penalty stroke and the ball was converted into the hands of Olivia Marie. However, Indian captain Savita Punia stood tall as goalkeeper to make three saves and help India clinch the bronze.

This created an emotional scene inside the stadium. The players were seen hugging each other and jumping for joy. This is the same team that lost in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics as well.
