Indians in foreign leagues – BCCI stand ‘No Indians allowed’: As reported by InsideSport earlier, BCCI officials are very upset with the announcement of some new foreign leagues. As the names of MS Dhoni and others do the rounds for mentorship roles in the ILT20 league and CSAT20 league, the BCCI is ready to issue a directive for everyone. Now according to a report in The Indian Express, MS Dhoni or others are not even allowed to do any kind of mentoring for the team. It is worth noting that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Cricket Limited has bought a team in Cricket South Africa’s upcoming T20 initiative.

“It is clear, no Indian player, including domestic players, can participate in any other league until he retires from all forms of the game. If any player wants to participate in this upcoming league, he can do so only after he sever all ties with the BCCI.” A BCCI official told The Indian Express.

Asked if a player like Dhoni could be part of such a league as a mentor or coach, the BCCI official said, “Then he cannot play IPL for CSK. He must retire here first.”: The newspaper also reported.

IPL Owners in Foreign Leagues: BCCI, the world’s richest cricket board, is concerned about the growing interest of IPL team owners in foreign leagues. Be it Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants or others – all are shopping in foreign leagues.

A top BCCI official reluctantly admitted to InsideSport that they are ‘Very concerned‘ On recent developments.

To protect their interests, the BCCI is unlikely to change the status of the ban on Indian players playing in these foreign leagues.

“BCCI has created a brand IPL and the entire sports world is in awe of it. We have to protect our brand. We are very concerned if names of IPL owners are associated with every foreign league.

“They are free to invest wherever they want but we will not give any kind of brand advantage because of IPL. No Indian player past or present will be allowed to join this league.”Angry BCCI officials.

IPL owners in foreign leagues – Why are BCCI worried? Be it UAE’s ILT20, Cricket South Africa’s T20 league or the Caribbean Premier League, IPL owners are prominent buyers of teams in these leagues.

  • Caribbean Premier League: 3 out of 5 owners are IPL team owners ie Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.
  • ILT20 League: Owners of KKR, MI, Delhi Capitals have fielded teams in the league promoted by the Emirates Cricket Board
  • CSA T20 League: All 6 teams in the league are owned by IPL team owners.

The BCCI has been inundated with requests from various boards and players to allow uncontracted Indian players to play in the league. But the Indian board is unlikely to remain silent.

BCCI has so far restricted the participation of their players in other leagues and the status quo will continue in this regard.
