This is the first time the Argentine superstar has missed the list since 2005. Messi’s last season for FC Barcelona came in the last season. Last summer, Lionel Messi joined PSG after a sensational summer transfer. Others nominated include Kylian Mbappe, Sadio Mane, Karim Benzema and Kevin De Bruyne.

Real Madrid captain and talismanic striker Karim Benzema is considered the favorite to win the trophy. The French forward guided Real Madrid to a memorable Champions League triumph in La Liga. Benzema has scored 15 goals in the Champions League and a total of 44 goals in all competitions.

As for Lionel Messi, his tenure at PSG did not rise to the standard it deserved. Messi managed only 6 six goals in his debut season in Ligue 1. Brazilian sensation Neymar also had a lackluster season, plagued by injuries that kept him out of the 30-man squad.
