The reason for Ricciardo’s departure

Ricciardo was never able to get going with McLaren’s engine as he struggled for form. Once considered the best over-taker on the Formula 1 circuit, Ricciardo has been a shadow of his former self since leaving Renault. A major reason for his exit was poor communication with the team which eventually led to his poor form.

Despite a promising start to his career at McLaren, he went nowhere even though he won the Italian GP out of nowhere. He has collected just 19 points in 13 races so far, which is indicative of his lack of confidence at the moment.

Another reason for Ricciardo’s departure was the form of Lando Norris, who he joined at McLaren. The British racer is currently 57 points ahead of him on 76 points, a major concern for the team once again parting ways with Ricciardo.

Who can replace Ricciardo at McLaren?

With Sergio Perez signed up long-term by Red Bull, the door to the senior team is as good as closed for the young French driver. Pierre Gasly didn’t do much with the opportunity he got at Red Bull in 2019 (when he was dropped to Toro Rosso halfway through the season) but since then, his performances at the Alfa Romeo have been a revelation.

He is rated very highly by everyone on the grid. The driver has scored a podium finish every season since his promotion to the AlphaTauri and consistently outscored his team-mate. For McLaren, Gasly is a young charger who may have the ability to push Lando Norris blow and push the team forward, something Daniel Ricciardo was unable to do during his career at McLaren.
